Event showcases women in West Virginia’s horse racing industry in celebration of Women’s History Month

CHARLESTON, WV – The Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs (HHOMA) is premiering a virtual event featuring women who have made great strides in West Virginia’s horse racing industry. The “Women in Racing” panel will take place Thursday, March 25, at 7 p.m. and the public can tune in on HHOMA’s Facebook page.

“This is a unique opportunity to hear from women involved in West Virginia’s horse racing industry and learn from their experiences,” said HHOMA Executive Director Jill Upson. “We’re very honored to host a panel of inspirational women who represent our state so well.”

The event includes a special introduction from West Virginia’s First Lady Cathy Justice – an accomplished equestrian in her own right – along with remarks from Mountaineer Park HBPA Executive Director Jana Tetrault, HHOMA Executive Director Jill Upson, and West Virginia Women’s Commission Executive Director Julie Palas.

Featured panelists include:

  • Vicky Moon | Author of “Sylvia Rideoutt Bishop had a Way with Horses: A Pioneering African American Woman’s Career Training Race Horses.”
  • Jennifer Johnson | Thoroughbred owner, breeder, and third-generation horse trainer. 
  • Carol Holden | Co-founder and president of the West Virginia Breeder’s Classic.
